Imran Khan quotes Congress to make a point on Jammu and Kashmir curfew

Speaking to reporters ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan quoted the Congress party to make a point on the curfew in Jammu and Kashmir. "For a start, they have to lift the curfew, that's the beginning. Even the Congress party in India has commented that poor people have been shut inside for 50 days. No one knows what's happening with the political prisoners. Modi has boxed himself in a blind alley," he said, according to ANI.

This is not the first time Pakistan has cited the opposition party in its attempt to internationalise the Kashmir issue. The grand old party had hit out strongly when a similar attempt was made by Shireen M. Mazari, minister for human rights in the Imran Khan government. Page six of an eight-page letter to UN on Kashmir referred to a statement by Rahul that people were "dying" in Jammu and Kashmir as “events had gone very wrong there”. Mazari's letter also referred to alleged "curbs on Eid celebration" and "violence against children".

Randeep Singh Surjewala, in-charge of communications at the Congress, issued a statement saying the name of Rahul had been "mischievously dragged to justify the pack of lies and deliberate misinformation being spread by Pakistan". Interestingly, Rahul also tweeted on Wednesday morning, condemning Pakistan as the "prime supporter of terrorism" in the world.

This had led to a domestic political churn, with even Prime Minister Narendra Modi claiming that the Congress, through its manifesto, was blowing the trumpet of Pakistan more than that of India.
