Disney’s first trailer of Aladdin released to negative reviews as fans trashed a rather ‘blue’ looking Will Smith. Many feared that the film was a goner thanks to the poor portrayal of the genie. However, the studio dropped a new trailer which seems to have calmed some naysayers. The 2.45-minute-long clip begins with Will Smith in a selfie video teasing the start of the trailer and ‘dropping’ his phone after a spin.
The new trailer shows a lot more of the genie, who now doesn’t appear to be as ‘blue’ as was initially thought. In some scenes, Will Smith looked just like any other person. The trailer debuted on Good Morning America and features the genie’s abilities to grant wishes. Aladdin (Mena Massoud) is seen trying to escape a bunch of men after stealing some items. The trailer largely focusses on the relationship between the genie and Aladdin, as the latter tries to become a prince.
Unlike the first trailer, this one shows a lot more of the city of Agrabah – there are glimpses of the roads and houses, along with the inhabitants. Later in the trailer, Aladdin appears transfixed when he sees Jasmine (Naomi Scott) for the first time. The film will also include a few tracks, as there’s a shot of the genie rapping to Friend Like Me. We also get to see the magic carpet in all its glory, carrying Aladdin and Jasmine over the city while the couple sings A Whole New World.
Aladdin is just one of the few Disney live-action films that are scheduled to release this year – the others being Lion King, Maleficent, and Dumbo. Aladdin releases on May 24.
